Journal #3 Due 2/5/10

How is freedom interpreted differently today than in the 1700's?

  1. We take it for granted where as people in the 1700's had to fight for it. For instance people on tv make fun of govermental officals if it were before freedom of speech they could be killed for what they said.

  2. Freedom now compared to the 1700 hundreds is different because in the 1700's, people's idea of freedom was something along the lines of being able to work and make money for your family rather than have to live the way their other country wanted them to before they immigrated. Now, freedom is more about freedom of speech and expressing oneself however they please without getting in trouble. That's the way I see it, at least.

  3. I agree with what Kevin said because it is true that we definitly take advantage of the fact that we say whatever is on our minds when in reality, some of the harsh things people say could have had them killed some time ago.

  4. Freedom today is different than what people in the 1700's fought to achieve. They wanted to be out from under the control of another country, England, and wanted to start their own government to be ruled for and by the people. People in the 1700's worked hard for what they achieved and were proud for what they accomplished. In today's society government is getting to strong and getting to involved with the daily lives of the people getting further away from the actual meaning of freedom. If the people continue to relie on the government than we are leaning more to a socialistic form of government and will lose our freedom altogether. If we continue this well we're becoming more and more socialist were everyone has to be equal. This is the way I see it. Freedom is taken for granted today and truely no one really understands what freedom is anymore.

  6. today we inturpret freedom as being able to do or say just about anything we want to do within reason. in the 1700's people had to fight to have any freedom if any. so pretty much we take it for granted.

  7. i agree with kevin americans take freedom for granted because weve never had to fight for it and any war that is fought for it is fought over seas were we dont see the reality of the fighting

  9. in the 1700s the only freedom people wanted was the freedom to make their own decisions; to be economically free and be their own people. Nowadays, people take freedom to mean the liberty to do whatever they want. really that's not freedom as much as it is anarchy. back in the 1700s people had it right; the ability to be who they wanted to be without people telling them what to do, thats freedom

  12. back in the 1700's you had to take/earn your freedom if you wanted it at all. now that times have changed and over 300 years has passed, its a lot easier to get freedom. this is because now it pretty much is just given to you, unless you do something wrong that would cause you to get it taken away.

  13. freedom today is very much taken for granted. people just assume that it's a basic right and they deserve it, while people in the 1700s had to fight and earn their freedom, along with the freedom for following generations.

i strongly agree with what jake says also

  14. freedom in the 1700's was more rare than today back then being able to pick a job, vote, and write a song of your true opinion was a true freedom now thatkind of stuff is taking for granted

  15. people take freedom for granted now. in the 1700's, having any freedom at all would have been a huge upgrade. now everyone is crying because of the patriot act, when theyre just protecting us from terrorists.

  18. freedom back in the 1700's was different than now because back then, not everyone was free. there were slaves and people couldnt say what they want or do what they want. now people have the right to do what they want and be who they want.

  20. freedom today is doing whatever you want, when you want. in the 1700's freedom meant just having basic rights like freedom of religion and what not

  21. today we do not understand at all the true meaning of freedom. almost everything that we do, see, hear, eat, or buy is a result of our freedom and the sacrafice that men and women have made over the past 300 years to secure our freedom. people today like to criticize the government and public officials, who more often than not are only trying to better our society and not just a particular individual.
In the 1700s people had to fight for almost all of their rights, from voting to buying the goods that they want. now we have thousands upon thousands of choices that have come about from others giving up their own freedoms. I think that almost everybody could benefit from taking a step back and truely looking at all that we have as a community and a country and stop complaining about having to pay .2% higher taxes or paying $.05 more for a gallon of gasoline. men and women work very hard in our government to keep our freedoms secure and safe.

  23. they had to fight for freedom to do basic things back in the day... now we want more freedom and are challanging laws that are dumb

  24. people are so greedy with their freedoms and just expect that they are given to them, like they are their god given rights. people around the world dont even have clean water and we have 20 different types of bottled water to choose from, but complain whine about food taxes and not having a large enough selection
